End-of-School Burnout Is Real...

By May, everyone is running on fumes -  kids, parents, teachers, coaches… honestly, all of us.

The end of the school year always seems to sneak up fast. One minute it’s spring break, and the next it’s late nights finishing projects, packed sports schedules, concerts, exams, graduation prep, and trying to squeeze everything into the final few weeks before summer.

We’ve been hearing the same thing over and over lately:
“I don’t know why I’m so exhausted.”
“My shoulders feel constantly tight.”
“My kid has been complaining about headaches.”
“I feel wired and tired at the same time.”

That’s because burnout doesn’t just show up emotionally - it shows up physically too.

When stress builds for weeks at a time, the nervous system shifts into survival mode. Sleep quality drops, posture gets worse, muscles stay tense longer, and the body has a harder time recovering. For kids, it can look like irritability, headaches, stomach aches, or difficulty focusing. For adults, it often shows up as neck tension, fatigue, brain fog, and feeling like your body just can’t fully relax.

The good news? Small resets throughout the day can help calm the nervous system and bring your body back into balance.

Easy nervous system resets:

  • Legs up the wall: Lie on your back with legs up a wall or couch for 1-2 minutes.

Why it works: This position helps improve circulation, relaxes the lower back, and signals to your nervous system that it’s safe to shift out of “fight or flight” mode.

  • Slow breathing: Inhale 4 seconds, exhale 6 seconds, 5-8 rounds

Why it works: Longer exhales help activate the parasympathetic nervous system - the part responsible for calming the body, lowering stress levels, and improving recovery.

  • Screen breaks: Every 30-45 minutes, stand up and stretch for 60 seconds

Why it works: Constant sitting and screen time create tension in the neck, shoulders, and spine. Frequent movement helps reset posture, improve blood flow, and reduce nervous system overload.

Burnout is your body asking for a pause - not another push.
