Before They Head Back to School!

There's something about the first week of school that feels exciting... and just a little chaotic.

Parents are checking supply lists, buying new clothes, packing lunches, and trying to get everyone back on an actual sleep schedule. Kids are figuring out new classrooms, new teachers, and carrying backpacks that somehow seem to weigh more every year.

It's a busy season - but it's also one of the most important times to pay attention to your child's posture and spinal health.

Every August, we start seeing an increase in kids (and parents!) coming in with headaches, neck pain, shoulder tension, and upper back discomfort. It's rarely because of one major injury. More often, it's the result of several small changes happening all at once.

Kids go from a relaxed summer routine to sitting at a desk for 6-8 hours a day. They're carrying heavy backpacks, spending time on laptops or tablets, and often looking down at their phones after school. Even adults feel it too - parents are back in the school drop-off line, commuting more, and settling back into longer workdays.

The good news? A few small habits can make a big difference before discomfort ever starts.

Try these back-to-school posture tips:

Backpack Weight Check - A backpack should weigh no more than 10-15% of your child's body weight. Encourage them to use both shoulder straps and adjust the straps so the backpack sits high against their back - not hanging low.

Why it works: A properly fitted backpack distributes weight evenly and reduces unnecessary stress on the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Wall Posture Reset - Have your child (or yourself!) stand with their head, shoulders, and hips gently touching a wall for 30-45 seconds.

Why it works: Most people don't realize how much their posture changes throughout the day. This simple exercise helps retrain your body to recognize a more neutral posture. If that "desk hunch" feeling sounds familiar to you too, here's a quick way to loosen it back up.

Movement Every Hour - Whether you're in class or at work, make it a goal to stand up, stretch, or walk for at least one minute every hour.

Why it works: Our bodies are designed to move. Frequent movement improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and gives the muscles supporting your spine a chance to reset.

Why Chiropractic Matters

Good posture isn't just about standing up straight - it starts with a healthy nervous system.

Your brain and spinal cord are constantly communicating with every muscle in your body. When your spine isn't moving well, those messages can become less efficient, making it harder for your body to maintain good posture, coordinate movement, and recover from the stresses of everyday life.

That's why chiropractic care isn't just for adults with back pain. We love helping kids stay balanced and thriving as much as we love helping teens, parents, and teachers stay ahead of problems before they become bigger issues.

As the school year begins, let's help your family start strong - not sore.

If your child has been complaining about headaches, neck pain, shoulder tension, or if you'd simply like to make sure they're starting the year with their best foot forward, we'd love to help. Give us a call or book online to schedule a visit.

Here's to a healthy, happy, and successful school year!
