Stop Trying to Sit Up Straight...

"Sit up straight."

You've probably heard it your entire life.

From your parents.

Your teachers.

Maybe even yourself.

But here's the problem:

Good posture isn't about holding yourself perfectly still all day.

Your body wasn't designed to freeze in one "perfect" position.

Real-life posture is dynamic.

You move.

You shift.

You bend.

You rotate.

You sit.

You stand.

You walk.

And your body should be able to do all of those things efficiently.

The goal isn't perfect posture.

The goal is a body that can move well and adapt to different positions without constantly creating pain or tension.

Try these posture resets:

Wall Angels

  • Stand with your back against a wall. Keep your head and upper back gently against the wall and slowly move your arms up and down.

  • Perform 8-10 repetitions.

  • Why it works: This challenges your upper-back mobility and shoulder movement while giving your brain feedback about where your body is in space.

Dead Bug

  • Lie on your back with your arms up and knees bent. Slowly lower the opposite arm and leg while keeping your low back controlled.

  • Perform 6-8 reps per side.

  • Why it works: This trains your core to stabilize your spine while your arms and legs move, something your body needs to do constantly during everyday activities.

Posture Check

Three times throughout the day, ask yourself:

"Where is my head? Where are my shoulders? Where are my feet?"

Then simply reset.

Why it works: Awareness comes before change. You can't improve a movement pattern you don't recognize.

Where Chiropractic Comes In

Posture is much more than appearance.

It's the way your muscles, joints, and nervous system work together to keep you balanced and moving through the world.

When certain areas of the spine aren't moving well, other areas often have to compensate. Over time, those compensations can contribute to stiffness, tension, and pain.

At Avant Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture - not just where it hurts.

We want to understand why your body is moving the way it is and help you build better movement patterns from there.

Good posture isn't about being rigid.

It's about having options.

If you've been dealing with recurring neck tension, back pain, headaches, or stiffness, don't just keep reminding yourself to "sit up straight." Let's figure out what's actually causing the problem. Schedule an evaluation with Avant Chiropractic and let's get to the root of it.
